Sword Oratoria: Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On the Side Review

xir5z6hSword Oratoria: Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On the Side is a spin-off from the original DanMachi series (review here). This series aired between April and July of 2017. This spin-off focuses on Ais Wallenstein, showing the event of the original series from the perspective of Ais and Lefiya Viridis, a young elf girl. Both Ais and Lefiya are members of the Loki familiar. As such it is their role to explore “the dungeon” and to gain strength. While the events of the original series are occurring, Ais uncovers a mysterious new breed of monsters. With no clue as to who or what created them, Ais and her party will venture deep into the dungeon. However, this only uncovers a larger pot with deep seeded roots in Ais’s mysterious pasts and so Lefiya will try ber best to lighten the load for her.

My Review: If you have read my review of the original series then you would know that I really liked it. And so I was expecting to like this one just as much. But unfortunately, I found this show to be painfully uninteresting. The plot is heavily character oriented around Ais and Lefiya. Lefiya as a character is fine, but her consistently changing attitude is exasperating. My biggest issue is with Ais, her entire character is that she consistently has no character. So having her as the main character is a terrible idea. Who wants a main character who always emotes with the same expression and tone. I can see that they tried to flesh out her background during the show but it didn’t really work. All the characters around her say that she is looking sad or distracted by something but she just has the same expression and behaviour, always. She worked fine as a supporting character in the main series, but shes just not main character material.

Related imageThe story itself wasn’t terrible, but there wasn’t a conclusion to anything. Ais’s backstory is never fully explained and the series ends with them killing a big monster, which ultimately ends up being pointless. It just seemed to half-hearted and tacked on. Every time we get to see some of the stuff from the original series, it just made me want to watch that instead.

I can see that they wanted to do a female-driven story set in the world, but I think that they should have just created all new characters and have in entirely unrelated to the main series, perhaps with a few references here and there.

I rate this anime 4.5/10.

What I’ve Been Watching: #3

Hello everyone, been a while since I’ve done one of these, anyway this is what I’ve been up to this week.

I watched a few OVA’s: Darker than Black: Origins and The Radio-wave like Girlfriend. The reviews for both are available here and here, respectively.

I also watched through Makoto Shinkai’s 5 Centimeters per Second, Review here.

Furthermore, I finished watching Sword Oratoria: Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On the Side. Which took me forever because I just couldn’t hold my interest. I finished it anyway because I vow to never drop a show. (Review coming soon, probably).

The Shows I’m currently watching include Yona of the Dawn and Angel Beats. I’m about 13 episodes into Yona and so far its fun enough. I have just started Angel Beats so I haven’t got much to say yet, but it’s not half bad.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Review

dungeon-ni-deai-wo-motomeru-no-wa-machigatteiru-darou-ka-5532c74b20b9bIs It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? saw is anime adaptation begin airing on the 4th of April 2015. The story follows a man by the name of Bell Cranel, a reckless hopeful dreaming of becoming the greatest of adventurers, he promptly attempts to join as one of the familiars to one of the gods, who have now taken to living amongst the mortals. However, after being rejected by every god family he encounters, Bell is left hopeless. That is until God Hestia offers him the choice to join her family -which currently does not exist in the slightest- and so begins Bell’s quest. He must venture into the dungeon to seek riches and fame, however, the journey will prove to be a perilous one as he is almost killed within upon his first ever venture into the dungeon.

Related imageMy Review: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? was a surprisingly solid show, I was expecting a hefty barrage of fan-service and shallow plot, but for the most part, the series title proved to be deceptively misleading. Bell as a character was well rounded and -I thought- provided many points of silly fun but also a seriousness that gave the show a feeling of wholeness. Many of the other characters such as Hestia, Ais and Welf worked in a similar way, if not a bit more two dimensional. The dungeon is an interesting environment, nothing new from what we can come to expect from these “RPG” anime, but I felt that there was enough detail to make the world feel properly lived in and not just packed with random details every which way, which I liked. The plot was short but kept a good pace, and managed to go through quite a few plot points, making the show feel longer than it was. Additionally to that, however, the actual length of the show left me wanting more (let’s see a second season hay). All in all, a well-rounded show an I would give it a solid recommendation.

I rate this anime 7.5/10.
